About Us

Anne Shirley-Peel is a highly gifted and experienced Violinist and teacher. She has been playing the violin since she was seven years of age. She comes from a very musical family and achieved a Diploma of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She also has an AMusA and later at Melbourne University she gained a Bachelor of Music majoring in Composition.

Not only has she played with many Australian Symphony Orchestras but she has also joined many other small chamber ensembles to do what she is passionate about, namely, making beautiful music.

She has taught privately and in many schools and has enabled many young people to excel in music performance because she has infected them with her commitment to high quality performance.

Anne studied at Sydney Conservatorium High School, gaining her Higher School Certificate and AMUSA in violin in 1971. While studying at the Sydney Conservatorium with Eva Kelly, Robert Pikler and Mary Nemet, she won scholarships and prizes, graduating with the Teacher’s Diploma (DSCM) in Violin 1975.  As part of these studies she studied conducting.

Further advanced post-graduate studies in violin in Hobart with Jan Sedivka 1976-78 and composition lessons with Don Kay and Ian Cugley.  Participated in conducting workshops with the Tasmanian Conservatorium String Orchestra under the supervision of Gwyn Roberts.

Overseas studies in Composition with Peter Maxwell-Davies at Dartington Summer School, UK in 1982.

Studied at the University of Melbourne with Peter Tahourdin, Barry Conyngham and Brenton Broadstock graduating with B.MUS majoring in Composition in 1987.
